VLA Activities
-
We meet together every year at the Vermont Library Conference to share information and entertainment with our colleagues in the Vermont Educational Media Association.
- We publish a lively bimonthly newsletter, VLA News, for our members.
- We support continuing education programs, workshops, and lectures throughout the year.
VLA Membership Advantages
- You’ll receive a significant discount on your registration for the Vermont Library Conference and other VLA programs.
- Through a collaboration between VLA and Drexel University , VLA members receive 20% off the regular tuition rate at Drexel for the following programs: Master of Science-Library & Information Science (ALA-accredited) and Master of Science in Information Systems. Visit http://www.drexel.com/vla for more details.
- We research salary guidelines and provide information to librarians, trustees, and employers.
- VLA officers represent our members on the American Library Association Council and the New England Library Association Board.
Our Principles
- We believe in intellectual freedom and back up our principles with action.
- VLA supports members who are faced with challenges to freedom to read, access to information, and other related issues.
- We administer the John Swan Intellectual Freedom Fund and coordinate a regular lecture series that brings nationally known speakers on this topic to Vermont.
- We advocate for libraries with state and federal government officials, representing the interests of all our members.
Our Enjoyment
We gather in small groups to share a meal, talk “library shop,” and get to know one another better. We recognize the achievements of outstanding librarians and trustees with awards presented at our annual conference. And we forge new friendships by serving as VLA officers and on useful committees and task forces dealing with library issues. We have a lot of fun and meet other librarians from around the state!
