DESCRIPTION:Emily Crist\, Champlain College. \nDespite an increasing awareness of the structural racial oppression and inequities within our society and institutions\, little research has worked to unpack how library practitioners understand the way race shows up in our spaces\, policies\, procedures\, behaviors\, and habits. This session will discuss a qualitative study that used a critical whiteness lens to explore (1) how whiteness is experienced within academic libraries and (2) what contexts and settings both locally and nationally (re)create habits of whiteness. SUMMARY:Vermont Humanities Council presents: Daisy Turner’s Kin
DESCRIPTION:Vermont folklorist Jane Beck shares the story of the Turner family\, a multigenerational saga spanning two centuries\, played out across three continents. The saga was related to Jane Beck by Daisy Turner\, who had listened to her father\, Alec Turner\, recount stories of the family past. \nHer captivating narrative covers the early 19th century British-African trade\, shipwreck\, birth of a biracial child\, slave trading\, enslavement\, plantation life\, escape\, Civil War\, moving north\, battling racism\, buying land and settling on a hilltop in Vermont that became a family center. \nDaisy also shared her own life story\, a powerful and rare account of the African American experience in New England from the 1880s forward. \nAbout the presenter: Jane Beck founded the Vermont Folklife Center in 1983 and served as its executive director until 2007. During that time\, she traveled the back roads of Vermont recording oral interviews of every day Vermonters\, and produced a variety of media productions\, exhibitions\, and publications. \nIn retirement\, she has completed a book\, Daisy Turner’s Kin\, an African American Family Saga\, based on sixty interviews with the daughter of slaves. \nThis program is presented in partnership with the Vermont Humanities Council as part of their Speakers Bureau. DESCRIPTION:Vermont Author Cynthia Bittinger will discuss her important book\, “Vermont Women\, Native Americans & African Americans: Out of the Shadows of History.” Originally published in 2012\, a Vermont Digger article at the time by Greg Guma stated\, “Given Vermont’s contemporary image as a refuge for independent and progressive thinkers it can be jarring to look at a not-so-distant past when the state was an isolationist bastion in which Native Americans had to call themselves gypsies to avoid sterilization….Cynthia D. Bittinger’s new book does not over-stress this “saddest chapter” in 20th century state history. But Vermont’s eugenics movement does suggest a central target of this slim\, significant volume\, which updates the traditional narrative.” Ms. Bittinger will talk about her book and also about plans to revise it.
