Children’s Library Assistant – Lawrence Memorial Library (Bristol, VT)

The Role:
Lawrence Memorial library is seeking a creative and collaborative part-time Children’s Library Assistant to help support our yearly children’s services and programs. The children’s library at Lawrence Memorial Library is a core service that provides high-quality materials for patrons birth-8th grade as well as enriching programs that cultivate creativity, personal knowledge, and a love of learning. Responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate on providing library services for children ages birth through grade 8 and their families.
  • Support the children’s librarian by providing monthly outreach storytimes to area in-home and daycare centers.
  • Perform routine circulation desk duties under professional supervision as well as help patrons locate and check out materials.
  • Collaborate and help host children’s and family programming in the children’s room.
  • Utilize knowledge, appreciation, and understanding of children’s materials in all formats to provide quality services to the Bristol community.
  • Support overall organization by providing circulation support to upstairs staff, as needed.
  • Attend Vermont Department of Libraries training, as needed.

Helpful knowledge, skills and abilities include:

  • Experience in children’s programming and/or outreach events.
  • Background or training in child development, early literacy skills and children’s literature.
  • Knowledgeable about library services and customer service skills.
  • Ability to use tact, courtesy and good judgment when communicating with coworkers and the public.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge, appreciation, and understanding of library materials, both print and electronic.
  • Effectively community and present ideas orally and in writing.
  • Work in both independent and collaborative environments.

Qualifications:
The position requires a High School diploma or GED equivalent as well as at least one year of clerical experience or program coordination. Proficient knowledge in using technology both for the administration of library services as well as providing support to patrons is essential. Experience in using Google Drive, Google Docs, and Google Sheets will be beneficial.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for libraries and working with diverse populations, especially children ages birth through 8th grade and their families. This role is part of a supportive, collaborative team environment and we’re hoping to add an organized, proactive, creative individual to our team!

Compensation:
This is a part-time position with an average of 15 hours per week and includes paid sick leave and paid holidays. Some weekend and evening availability is required. Pay range for this position is $15-$17.50 an hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
