Birdie Award 2018
Birdie Award – Now Accepting Nominations
It is time to award the 2nd biennial Birdie Award to recognize an outstanding individual in the field of technical services. The Birdie Award was created in 2014 in memory of Birdie MacLennan, a librarian at UVM who went above and beyond to share her knowledge and skills with the Vermont library community.
Although many technical services tasks happen behind-the-scenes, they are the backbone of the library. Who has gone above and beyond in the technical services area in your library? Now is the time to give them the recognition they deserve. Please email your nomination to sknight3@smcvt.edu. Be sure to include the technical services staff member’s name, place of work, and a brief statement supporting the nomination (no more than 250 words.) Deadline: March 15, 2018
Birdie Award
The Birdie Award was created in March 2014 as a memorial and to honor outstanding librarians like her. Birdie MacLennan joined the University of Vermont Libraries in 1990 and last served as the Director of Resource Description and Analysis Department. She was the Project Director and Principal Investigator for the Vermont Digital Newspaper Project. Birdie established the SERIALIST mailing list in 1990. She was active in many professional associations, including but not limited to: International Federation of Library Associations, North American Serials Interest Group, the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services section of ALA, and the New England Technical Services Librarians. Birdie held a Master of Library Sciences from Simmons College, and a Master of Arts in French from UVM. She was well known for her love of languages, her research in Vermont and Quebec history, and her dedication to professional collaboration and education. Birdie was widely respected, loved mentoring new librarians, and was a fixture in technical services in Vermont.
This award will be given biennially to a librarian who has provided outstanding service in the field of technical services. Nominees must be working in a Vermont Library.
NACO Training – June 9th, 2015
On June 9, 2015, seven librarians from around the state attended a one-day workshop to enhance their skills to create name authorities records for the Vermont Name Authorities Cooperative (NACO) Funnel Project. The workshop was sponsored and hosted by VLA Technical Services. Training was lead by Ohio NACO Funnel Coordinator, Sevim McCutcheon, Catalog Librarian at Kent State University.
The Vermont NACO Funnel Project consists of cataloging librarians from University of Vermont, Middlebury College, Goddard College, Marlboro College, VTLib, and the VT Historical Society who work together to contribute name authority records to the national authority file maintained by the Library of Congress. Many of the names contributed by the VT NACO Funnel represent local authors, corporate bodies, families, places, events, and historical persons.
Participating librarians in the June workshop include: Terry Simpkins (Middlebury), Tom McMurdo (VTLib), Hannah Martin (UVM), Helen Linda (Goddard), Rachel Gravel (Marlboro), Dan Saulean (UVM), and Amber Billey (UVM). Thanks to everyone who attended the workshop!
