Job Summary
The Library Substitute will carry out routine Circulation Desk duties and serve in all departments as needed. They will provide a positive and welcoming experience to all Library visitors and assist patrons of all ages in locating library materials. The Substitute will work on library related projects as time permits.

Examples of Duties

  1. Greets patrons and helps in finding information and recommending books as needed.
  2. Provides patron assistance in locating Library materials, using the online catalog.
  3. Shares accurate information about library programs and services with the public.
  4. Performs routine circulation functions accurately, including checking items in and out, registering new patrons, updating patron information, and placing holds.
  5. Assists patrons in the use of library computers and equipment.
  6. Assists with administrative duties as needed.
  7. Answers telephone and directs calls.
  8. Shelves materials as needed.
  9. Reads shelves to ensure materials are in proper order.
  10. Enforces library policies in an appropriate manner.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  1. High school diploma or equivalent with one year customer service experience required.

Supplemental Information

  1. Ability to deal tactfully, courteously, and effectively with the public and other employees.
  2. Strong communication skills; familiarity with Canva is preferred.
  3. Ability to learn and apply new computer skills.
  4. Ability to learn library procedures and apply policies.
  5. Ability to work with a high degree of accuracy, efficiency, and dependability.
  6. Prior experience working with adults in a library or bookstore setting is preferred.
  7. Bachelor’s degree with one year of customer service experience, or equivalent, is preferred.
  8. Fluency in a language other than English is preferred.
