I am pleased to report on my second day at ALA in Washington, DC. Our first Council meeting was held in the morning and we heard reports from committees and officers. We adopted a resolution Reaffirming Equal Employment for GBTL library workers. We also passed a resolution on Non-Discrimination in Conference Contracts. These resolutions will be posted to the ALA website soon.
In the afternoon I went to see Will Shortz amuse a large audience with his puzzles. Before his presentation the Public Library Association Awards were given out. Following his presentation I attended a council forum, which is an informal meeting for councilors to discuss upcoming business. I will let you know which of the proposals introduced make it to council floor.
After the forum I was very pleased to attend the John Cotton Dana Award reception. North Carolina councilor Rodney Lippard’s library won an award for their Band Books Tour at Barton College Library. He invited a small group of us to be on hand to watch him accept the award and the $5,000.00 check that came along with it.
I hope that Vermont libraries will take a look at these awards. It is certainly possible for a Vermont library to win one of these!
