Library Director – New Haven Community Library (New Haven, VT)

The New Haven Community Library is seeking a Library Director to begin by the end of January or before. The position is 30 hours per week, including  evenings and Saturdays.

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who is welcoming, service-oriented, has a passion for literature and learning, and has the ability to work with patrons of all ages and interests. The successful candidate must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be comfortable with public speaking.

Our ideal Library Director candidate will be informed about emerging library trends beyond traditional library services. They will be proficient in technology and willing to keep abreast of the latest developments that can be useful in a library setting. Evidence of administrative and organizational skill is required. The Library Director will recognize the importance of the library as a community resource, and as a community gathering place.

General Description 

The Library Director, as the only employee, is responsible for day-to-day operation of the library and future planning, including:

  • cultivation of an environment that is respectful and welcoming
  • development and implementation of services and programs
  • collection development and maintenance, cataloging and circulation
  • patron support and community outreach, including maintaining a presence of the library on social media
  • care and maintenance of library space
  • effective working relationships with Trustees and Town officials and staff of regional libraries
  • preparation and presentation of monthly and annual reports to the Trustees and Town officials
  • managing and planning the library budget using Quickbooks software
  • recruitment, support and supervision of volunteers and substitutes
  • collaboration with “Friends of the Library” in fund-raising and other community programming

The director works closely with the Board of Trustees with respect to policy, budget, short and long-term planning. Our library is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and the librarian is hired by and reports to the Board of Trustees.

Qualifications: 

  • A Bachelor’s degree is the minimum requirement.
  • A Master’s in Library Science from an accredited American Library Association program OR
  • A commitment to and progress in actively working toward Vermont Department of Libraries certification.
  • Experience in library work, education, business with a customer service focus, research, or grant-writing preferred.

Physical requirements: This position requires bending, lifting, pushing, carrying books, sitting and standing for extended periods.

Salary Will be based on experience and qualifications with a potential range of $37,000-$42,000 for a 30 hour work week.
