The Position
The Wilder Memorial Library in Weston, VT is seeking a dynamic, creative, community-oriented and mission-driven individual, a self-starter who believes in the power of libraries to transform both communities and individuals. As Director, this person will guide the Library into an exciting future in our newly renovated and expanded library scheduled to reopen in the spring of 2026. This is an incredible opportunity for the right person to lead our beautiful new Library into a new era.
Our mission is for the Library to be a key hub in our community, providing a warm, inclusive and stimulating environment for all ages.
The primary responsibilities of the Library Director are to:
- Envision, create, and implement effective and creative programs and services for the community and be an advocate for the Library
- Build the Library’s collection
- Hire, coach, and evaluate employees and volunteers
- Manage the annual budget, grant writing, and assist the Board with fundraising
- Oversee the daily operations of the facility
- Collaborate with library staff (two part-time staff) and Board of Trustees
Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree is required, ideally in Library Science or a related field, although applicable work experience will be considered. The successful candidate will be encouraged to work toward a Vermont Public Library certificate if they do not have a degree in Library Science, and must be willing to pursue continuing education to stay current in library science.
Management and supervisory experience is desired as is proficiency with or a willingness to learn certain software such as QuickBooks and Squarespace. Excellent communication and organizational skills are necessary and fundraising and financial management skills are desirable. This is a community-facing position and the right candidate should be able to engage the public in a positive manner; think creatively to identify the needs of the library and community; and create partnerships within the broader community. This position reports to the Board of Trustees.
Hours and Salary
This position is for a minimum of 20 hours a week, including some Saturday hours and some evenings. Pay ranges between $24-$27 hour depending upon experience. Benefits include time off for vacation and personal time.
About the Library
Wilder Memorial Library is a 125 year old municipal library housed in a 200 year old historic building with a collection of 2930 items. In 2025 we began an expansion project to honor the history of the library while adding 1300 square feet including ADA accessibility, a newly-designed children’s room, space for community events, and an open-design main floor. The town of Weston has over 600 residents and there are currently 916 registered patrons who check out an average of 220 items per month.
