Overview

The Department promotes excellence and innovation in local libraries through training and technical assistance and fosters statewide cooperation and resource sharing among all types of libraries. The Assistant State Librarian for Library Advancement will play an important leadership role in strategic planning for the Department, and must have a broad understanding of the library field, vision and passion, and must champion change and innovation.

Class Definition

Administrative, planning, technical, assessment, supervisory, and consulting work including direction of the Library Advancement program at the Department of Libraries. The Assistant State Librarian for Library Advancement will assist the State Librarian in the planning, development, and assessment of current Department programs and services and will direct a program which advances local library service for Vermont citizens.

Work is performed under the direction of the State Librarian; the employee may assume administrative duties of the Department in the absence of the State Librarian.

Environmental Factors

Duties are generally performed in an office setting. Some travel and field work is required which will require private means of transportation. Travel to conferences and meetings, including out-of-state, is required. Some evening, weekend, and occasional work on holidays.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree or higher in library science from an institution accredited by the American Library Association AND at least five (5) years or more of professional library experience, INCLUDING three (3) years or more of experience in library or similar administration with supervision of employees.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience as the director of a public library.

Experience working with a library board of trustees.

Experience with grants management and or project management.

Experience as an administrator.
