Children’s Programming Coordinator – Morrill Memorial and Harris Library (Strafford, VT)

Responsibilities for this part-time position at the Morrill Memorial and Harris Library in Strafford, Vermont  include overseeing children’s programming, including planning and executing a weekly after school program during the school year with a craft or activity tie-in; six weeks of summer reading programming; bi-weekly or monthly outreach to the Creative Preschool; and occasional special programs.
Programs should be literacy based, age appropriate and include quality children’s literature. Other duties as needed include: shopping for arts and craft materials, keeping materials in order, arranging for a volunteer to help with programs, and contracting with outside performers/presenters.  The position reports to the Library Director. Depending on the time of year, this position involves 3-7 hours of work per week. Class Definition

Administrative, planning, technical, assessment, supervisory, and consulting work including direction of the Library Advancement program at the Department of Libraries. The Assistant State Librarian for Library Advancement will assist the State Librarian in the planning, development, and assessment of current Department programs and services and will direct a program which advances local library service for Vermont citizens.

Work is performed under the direction of the State Librarian; the employee may assume administrative duties of the Department in the absence of the State Librarian.

Environmental Factors

Duties are generally performed in an office setting. Some travel and field work is required which will require private means of transportation. Travel to conferences and meetings, including out-of-state, is required. Some evening, weekend, and occasional work on holidays.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree or higher in library science from an institution accredited by the American Library Association AND at least five (5) years or more of professional library experience, INCLUDING three (3) years or more of experience in library or similar administration with supervision of employees.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience as the director of a public library.

Experience working with a library board of trustees.

Experience with grants management and or project management.

Experience as an administrator.

Overview: Receives written and oral direction from the library director. Provides computer maintenance for the public and staff. Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit, talk, hear and use stairs. The employee may also be required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel and crouch. The employee may also be able to lift up to 30 pounds and carry books up and down stairs and push full book carts.
Experience and Education:

About the Dorset Library:
The Library is in the center of Dorset, Vermont, within walking distance to cafes, galleries and shops. Dorset is a small, quaint town of 2000 residents. The library has about 900 patrons which fluctuates between seasons. Approximately 20,000 items are in the collection and the library hosts approximately 30-40 programs and events each year, not including regular programs such as Lego Club and Story Time. Dorset is home to the Dorset Players and the Dorset Summer Theater Festival and the area offers many outdoor activities such as hiking and skiing.
