Rural Legal Education Project – Free Law Programs at Vermont Public Libraries

This program is a JOINT VENTURE between the Vermont Bar Association and the Vermont Department of Libraries with the purpose of expanding education outreach programs to rural Vermont adults.

The program provides a licensed Vermont attorney as a speaker on a legal topic of interest selected by the librarian. In addition to the 45 minute presentation, the attorney will answer questions for approximately another 45 minutes. These are lively and informative sessions.

Midstate Library Service Center to Re-open October 19

Good news!

The Midstate Library Service Center will re-open to school and public libraries on Tuesday, October 19.

DOL will send a letter this week (via email) to all school and public libraries with details about MLSC services and our new borrowing policies. We urge libraries to review the new policy (to be posted later this week on the DOL website) before visiting MLSC. Please note that we are not able to extend service to the general public.

New MLSC hours: Tuesday and Thursday, 10 am – 4 pm.

MLSC will keep this schedule of reduced hours until further notice. We are continuing the long, arduous process of weeding and merging three book collections (Midstate Library, State Library in Montpelier, and Northeast Regional Library) which will be completed no later than June 30, 2011.

Thanks for your patience and understanding. If you have questions, please contact Jeremiah Kellogg at MLSC (828-232-0) or Assistant State Librarian Christine Friese (828-2714).

National Novel Writing Month & Libraries

As an annual participant in National Novel Writing Month (Nanowrimo) each November I am always interested in finding new place to suggest/hold write-ins, and surprised to find out how many libraries have never even heard of it!

I learned today that the Nanowrimo offices have developed resources for libraries who want to get involved in Nanowrimo. There’s even some free stuff, I hear:

Come Write In: Libraries
Nanowrimo Library Outreach Guide

I hope some of you will consider welcoming the Wrimos into your libraries. There are many parts of the state where folks are isolated and don’t know where to go to meet up with people. If you choose to do something for Nanowrimo, please let me know so that I can share it on our community forums. And, of course, if you have any questions at all, please feel free to let me know!
