Substitute Library Assistant – Jericho Town Library (Jericho, VT)

Jericho Town Library is excited to announce an opportunity to join our small team as a Substitute Library Assistant. This is an on-call, non-benefitted position with no guaranteed hours.

Pay is $15/hour.

The Substitute Library Assistant will provide coverage during librarian and assistant library technician absences, including both scheduled time off and occasional short-notice shifts. The successful candidate will often be the only staff member on site. Training will be provided.

Job Responsibilities

  • Maintain a welcoming and inclusive environment for visitors
  • Assist patrons in locating and utilizing library resources
  • Check materials in and out using the library circulation system
  • Answer basic questions about library services and technology
  • Shelve and organize library materials
  • Open and close the library as assigned
  • Perform light clerical and organizational tasks

Qualifications

  • Basic computer skills and willingness to learn new technologies
  • Experience with or willingness to learn to use library software
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Comfortable working with children, families, and the general public
  • Flexible availability, including occasional short-notice coverage

Substitute Circulation Assistant – Stowe Free Library (Stowe, VT)

Are you passionate about connecting with your community?  Do you enjoy helping your neighbors access technology, services and books?  The Town of Stowe is looking for friendly and reliable substitutes to join our team at Stowe Free Library to help staff the circulation desk, particularly on Mondays and Saturdays, and fill in during staff absences.

Substitute Circulation Assistants provide a warm welcome to the public and those seeking assistance.  Substitutes assist library visitors at the circulation desk, provide basic reference and technology assistance, and help patrons connect to programs, materials and additional resources, all while providing excellent customer service.

While library experience is preferred, with Integrated Library Systems (ILS) in Koha or VOKAL desirable, we are eager to train the right candidate.

Essential Functions
  • Work directly with patrons, checking library materials in and out on the computer, renewing items, and placing and filling hold requests.
  • Prepare items for shelving and keep materials in order.
  • Register new patrons for library cards and add HomeCard patrons to the patron database.
  • Follow procedures for opening or closing the library during morning or evening shifts.
  • Help patrons find materials in the library and answer directional and basic reference questions.
  • Assist patrons with the use of computer software and the Internet.
  • Refer to programming calendars and staff updates to stay up to date on what’s happening in the library and consult procedures manuals to help meet patrons’ needs.
  • Stay current in technologies required to perform work duties.
  • Stay current on safety protocols in the library.

Qualifications

  • Ability to deal courteously and efficiently with a variety of individuals.
  • Ability to communicate with other library staff about job duties, collections, patron needs, and scheduling.
  • Ability to use basic office equipment such as phones, computers, and the Internet.
  • Must be able to organize alphabetically and by number.
  • Must be attentive to details.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professional demeanor.
  • Ability to use discretion in managing confidential information.
  • Work professionally with people from a wide variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
