Teen Services Specialist – Brooks Memorial Library (Brattleboro, VT)

Nature of work:
Perform para-professional work providing a full range of library services. Responsible for all aspects of teen services and space, including programming, collection development, outreach, promotion, drafting policy, and supervision of teen room. Duties involve reference, reader’s advisory, circulation, and the training of youth services clerk staff and volunteers. Maintain Youth Services section of library website. Collaborate with Youth Services Librarian on programming and collection development for children’s room. Provide back-up and/or substitution for children’s programming and reference service when the Youth Services librarian is unavailable. Regularly staff Children’s Room circulation desk.

Work Schedule: Full-time 37.5 hours per week; Monday – Friday including Saturdays in schedule rotation and Friday evenings as required for teen-only programs.
Wages: $21.47 per hour
Supervision Received: Receives supervision from Youth Services Librarian.
Supervision Exercised: None.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Empower teens by providing materials, resources, and programming for education, entertainment, and engagement, as outlined in the service priorities of current strategic plan.
  • Collaborate with Youth Services Librarian to provide support for children’s collection development, programming, and public service.
  • Foster personal and supportive relationships with teen library patrons.
  • Supervise, manage, and recruit for Teen Advisory Group. Schedule and prepare for monthly meetings, including meals.
  • Manage projects and programs for the teen volunteers and delegate responsibilities (where possible).
  • Implement suggestions, feedback, and requests from meetings.

Competencies Needed: We will consider any combination of relevant work experience, volunteering, education, and transferable skills as qualifying, unless specifically stated as required.

  • A minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience working with youth or a public library or a college degree.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with teens, children, and adults.
  • Ability to remain current with literature, trends, and topics for young adults.
  • Extensive knowledge of different stages of adolescence.
  • Experience with strategies of positive relationship building with youth, including developing outside assets such as allies, opportunities, and supports within the community.

Work Environment: Work duties are primarily performed in a public library setting in a moderate to fast-paced work environment. Must be able to abruptly switch focus to address frequently changing priorities. Requires the ability to maintain mental focus in an often-busy environment that welcomes members of the public. Will be sitting and standing, with extensive use of a telephone, computer, and keyboard. Requires sharing an open public service desk with co-workers. Requires ability to assess volatile or potentially dangerous situations with patrons and follow library procedures.

Type of Employee: Non-Exempt; this position is affiliated with Local 98 Union after completion of successful probationary period (1 year of probation).

General Purpose

Creative energetic and innovative library professional. Responsible for administrative work in planning and managing the activities of youth (Tween, ages 10-12 years old) and young adult (Teen, ages 13-19 years old) services in the library and all other related work as required. Tween/Teen Librarian works under the general direction of the Head of Youth Services. Functions requiring considerable judgment and initiative in planning and overseeing services to youth and young adults between the ages of 10 to 18 both within the library and the community.

Essential Job Functions

  • Performs work under typical library conditions; library hours will require evening and weekend work.
  • Plans, organizes, implements, and evaluates services to youth and young adults.

  • Provides reference and readers’ advisory services, media literacy programming and library orientation to youth and young adults.
  • Collaborates and partners with schools other libraries, social service agencies, civic organizations and other professional organizations to develop, promote, facilitate, and evaluate innovative programs to meet the expressed and anticipated needs of the community’s youth and young adult population including reading clubs, homework help, instructional workshops, Makerspace programs, STEM and literacy programs, gaming, summer reading events, tech programs and a variety of other programs both in the Library and throughout the community.
  • Promotes, publicizes and represents youth and young adult services and the library to the community and local agencies in cooperation with other departments.
  • Works with library administration to seek supplementary funding to enhance library services, including state and federal grants.
  • Assists in grant writing as needed.
  • Trains and supervises interns, teen volunteers, and teen advisory councils.

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements

YA Librarian – Rutland Free Library (Rutland, NY)

Rutland Free Library is seeking a 30-hour young adult / tech librarian. We’re looking for a curious and energetic individual to join our team of professionals in curating our collection of some 75,000 print titles and an ever-growing online presence, plus be able to generate engaging programming and outreach to Rutland’s tween / teen population.
