Help/Reference Desk – Rutland Free Library (Rutland, VT)

Rutland Free Library is looking for a librarian for our Help / reference Desk. Primary duties include assisting users with our public computers — especially printing — basic upkeep of public computers, readers’ advisory, and generally helping users access the collection and find their way around the building.

An ideal candidate will have a degree in library and information science but experience working in a reference environment will be considered in lieu of a degree. Good technology skills are a must. We use Koha, Aspen, Deep Freeze, Comprise, Assabet, Libby, Palace, and Kanopy software, and troubleshooting print jobs is pretty much a daily task.

Rutland Free Library is an independent, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose sole responsibility is providing library services to the communities of Rutland City, Rutland Town, Mendon, Tinmouth, and Ira, which support our work through taxes.  We are large only by Vermont standards, with some 80,000 titles available. We lend in print, ebook, audiobook on CD, as well as streaming video, music, and audiobooks.

This is a 15-hour position with limited prorated benefits. It will require some evening and Saturday work shared among librarians. Starting wage is $29.03 / hour.

Public Services Assistant – St. Paul’s School – Ohrstrom Library (Concord, NH)

Status: Non-exempt, 20-24 hours per week, school year

Department: Library

Reports To: Library Director

Summary: Provides reference, reader’s advisory, technology training, and other assistance to library patrons. Oversees student use of the library. Supports circulation and cataloging tasks, including interlibrary loans, holds, reserves, and shelving. This is a part-time position that requires some evening and weekend hours. When school is in session, the Library typically closes at 9:30 pm.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities : 

  • Assisting directly with a wide range of circulation desk operations, including: interlibrary loans, checking materials in and out, placing holds and recalls on items in various formats; locating library materials; directing patrons.
  • Employing strong customer service and communication skills, including: answering general reference questions; assisting students and faculty with navigating Ohrstrom Library’s web page; referring specialized requests to appropriate library staff as necessary.
  • Responding to informational requests requiring strong familiarity with Ohrstrom Library’s and St. Paul’s School’s policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Employing strong organizational and interpersonal skills and good judgment, investing special attention to the security and well-being of students; monitoring student behavior to ensure appropriate building use and compliance with rules; facilitating study conditions during specified evening hours; remaining vigilant to visitors and their appropriate interactions with students and use of the library; proactively responding to building emergencies by preparing work order requests or contacting Facilities as necessary.
  • Contributing fully on a pre-determined schedule to the detailed and critical opening and closing procedures for the library.
  • Assisting with library projects and initiatives, such as programs, displays, weeding and other collection projects.
  • Shelving materials.

Adjunct Access Services and Instruction Librarian – Northfield Mount Hermon (Mt. Hermon, MA)

Northfield Mount Hermon, an independent co-educational boarding school in western Massachusetts, seeks a temporary (to cover a leave) part-time Adjunct Access Services and Instruction Librarian for the 2022-2023 school year for 20 – 25 hours/week. This position will

The Schauffler Library is at the heart of campus and occupies an important physical and virtual space at NMH. The Adjunct Access Services and Instruction Librarian position plays a key role in the Library team and has the opportunity to work one-on-one and in the classroom with students engaged in scholarly activities.

Northfield Mount Hermon seeks a dynamic self-starter to work at the library’s multi-service point and provide research, citation, and technology assistance to students. This position will cover the circulation desk as needed; participate in the Library’s information literacy program; assist with administering electronic resources; occasionally provide an adult presence and help to oversee study hall in the evening; and other projects as assigned.

The successful applicant will have a Master’s degree in library science or equivalent experience and at least one year’s experience providing instruction and public services in an academic library. We will consider outstanding candidates who have not yet received their degrees but have completed core reference and instruction coursework. Candidates must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a demonstrated capacity to work effectively with colleagues and other members of the community.
