General Capabilities:
Candidates will have a demonstrated passion for matching patrons with physical and digital experiences. They should have a working at the circulation desk, a knowledge of library policies and procedures, be conversant with our digital resources, and be familiar with our integrated library system. While not all are required they will be a quick and eager learner. We have a training program ready to go working with our Circulation Librarian.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Opening and closing the library as directed
  • Checking in and checking out books using Biblionix
  • Accessioning new books, magazines, and other content
  • Cataloging and weeding books, general upkeep of the collection
  • Staffing the circulation desk
  • Assisting patrons with the computer and internet
  • Helping to implement programs
  • Attending professional development programs virtually or in person
  • Demonstrating interest in participating in paralibrarian certification
  • Working hours as scheduled by the Director

In FY2022, the library had a $136,980 budget and we are planning on a small increase in FY2023. The budget funds for up to 36 hours of library assistants. We have a community of volunteers who supplement the assistants as needed.

Our Ideal Director
The Director will possess exceptional interpersonal and communication skills. They will foster a collaborative and cooperative work style with staff, Trustees, and other town department heads. The Director is an active budget, policy and program development leader. The successful candidate will be an integral part of the community and comfortable in managing planning, assessing patron needs of all ages, and driving future engagement.

The director will be responsible for the managerial, administrative, and financial management of the library. They will also oversee the collection, service patrons, supervise staff and volunteers, and partner with the town administrator.

The director will play a pivotal role in implementing our Better Together strategy that imagines, creates, and delivers lifelong learning programs and information services. We do this in partnership with other town organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Leadership and overall management for the library;
  • Knowledge of current and evolving library regulations and trends;
  • Operational management of staff, budget, and initiatives;
  • Presentation of monthly reports/dashboards representing usage, activity, and financial updates;
  • Identification, design, and management of all adult and children’s programs;
  • Promotion of library and library programs through physical and digital channels;
  • Understanding of Apollo Biblionix, web site and data management;
  • Maintenance of financial records in accordance with local, state, and federal laws;
  • Management and recommendation of policies and procedures;
  • Maintenance of records as required by state;

Qualifications:
There are two types of candidates we are interested in:

  • An MLS (MLIS) or are working on a degree from an AALA-accredited program
  • A completed/are working on a paralibrarian certification. We are open to having a director
    mentor to provide guidance as needed.

Professional experience in public library and supervision experience are required.

Library Director – Plainfield Libraries (Plainfield, NH)

Appointed by an elected board of Library Trustees and under its general direction, our Library Director has overall administrative responsibility for the  Meriden Library and the Philip Read Memorial Library.  We are a community of approximately 2,400 located in the beautiful Upper Valley region of New Hampshire, close to Dartmouth College, a world-class medical center, many technology firms, as well as a multitude of recreational opportunities. This position requires independent judgment, initiative, and proven management skills.

Summary of Responsibilities: The Library Director administers, develops, and oversees all aspects of library operations, including personnel selection, supervision and evaluations of staff and volunteers; budgeting and expenditures; collection development and maintenance; library technology, facility maintenance; programming; marketing; policies and procedures; and vendor relations.  The successful candidate will serve as an ambassador within the community, advocating and promoting the library’s mission by demonstrating enthusiasm and creativity along with an understanding and respect for the needs and interests of the community. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; a thorough working knowledge of current library policies, practices, technologies, and trends; and strong people and task management skills are essential.

Educational Requirements: A Master’s degree in Library Science from an accredited college or university is strongly preferred.  A Bachelor’s degree plus substantial work experience in a management position at a public library may be considered in lieu of a Master’s degree.

Work Experience Requirements: At least three (3) years of progressively responsible library experience, including supervisory experience, preferably in a public library setting.

Hours, Salary, and Benefits: This non-exempt position is 36 hours per week and includes occasional evening and weekend hours.  The pay rate range will be  $24.70– $27.20, depending on qualifications and experience, along with a benefits package.

ALA Donates $3,500 to Assist Vermont Libraries Damaged by Floods, Encourages More Donations

Catastrophic flooding in July 2023 impacted the state of Vermont, including many libraries. Seventeen public libraries suffered damage to their buildings and loss of resources. Thanks to support from American Library Association (ALA) members and other library supporters around the country, the ALA Disaster Relief Fund is sending $3,500 to the Vermont Library Association (VLA) to disburse to those libraries hardest hit and in need of financial assistance.

Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Montpelier, the state capitol, suffered major damage to infrastructure and was not open to the public for several months. Staff provided curbside pickup of library materials and provided internet access outside the building.

Johnson Public Library is providing library services from its temporary location in the Johnson Masonic Temple, while work on the library building continues. Post-flood building repairs at the Johnson Public Library building include heating, electrical, flooring, and insulation installation.

Water flooded the South Londonderry Free Library through both the roof and the basement during the storms. The library continued service to the public despite having on-going repairs.

Circulation Supervisor – Rutland Free Library (Rutland, VT)

Rutland Free Library needs an organized, experienced individual to be our next circulation supervisor. This is a full-time, salaried position.

The Circulation Supervisor works closely both with the front desk staff and the administrative team. It’s a challenging, fast-paced job in a computerized environment in a busy public building. The circulation department is primarily responsible for accurately checking in and out 150,000-plus items a year, and for being the first point of contact with our users.

The ideal candidate will have experience with scheduling, staff supervision, and troubleshooting technology.

YA Librarian – Rutland Free Library (Rutland, NY)

Rutland Free Library is seeking a 30-hour young adult / tech librarian. We’re looking for a curious and energetic individual to join our team of professionals in curating our collection of some 75,000 print titles and an ever-growing online presence, plus be able to generate engaging programming and outreach to Rutland’s tween / teen population.
Duties include:
  • Providing a well-managed YA physical and virtual collection (c. 3,500 titles) and space;
  • Creating compelling YA programming, spaces, and resources in collaboration with our community partners, on- and off-site;
  • Participate with other librarians in Help Desk coverage providing direct reference service to patrons of all ages and backgrounds;
