DisasterAssistance.gov is a user-friendly Web portal that consolidates disaster assistance information in one place. Individuals in need of assistance following a presidentially declared disaster designated for individual assistance can now go to DisasterAssistance.gov to register online.
Brattleboro Literary Festival Sept. 30-Oct. 3
Come to the ninth annual Brattleboro Literary Festival. This year’s festival runs from September 30 to October 3, and I sincerely hope you can attend. We have 35 writers coming to town for free readings, signings, panel discussions, and general merriment.
Our poets this year are Maxine Kumin, Cynthia Zarin, Marilyn Nelson, Josephine Dickinson, Ravi Shankar, David Budbill, and Geof Hewitt.
Fiction writers include Sue Miller, Pete Nelson, Allegra Goodman, and Rebecca Chace, who will show a short film based on her first novel.
Non-fiction writers include Nick Flynn, Sylvie Weil (who has written a book about her aunt, Simone Weil), Bruce Feiler, Ilyon Woo, Bernd Heinrich, and many others.
There are also many children’s and young adult authors, most notably Katherine Paterson and Jan Reynolds.

State Farm Good Neighbor Service-Learning Grants
State Farm is proud to team up with Youth Service America to offer grants of up to $1,000 for youth-led service-learning initiatives is all 50 states and the District of Columbia, and in the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Ontario, and New Brunswick. Eligible programs will engage youth in service-learning, an effective teaching and learning strategy that promotes student learning, academic achievement, workplace readiness, and healthy communities. State Farm Good Neighbor Service-Learning Grants encourage semester-long projects (following YSA’s Semester of Service framework) that launch on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service (January 17, 2011) and culminate on Global Youth Service Day (April 15-17, 2011).
STS Innovation in Science and Technology Librarianship Award
The purpose of the award is to recognize creative, innovative approaches to solving problems or improving products and services in science and technology librarianship. The award recognizes and promotes leadership and initiative that demonstrate impact on the academic and research community.
Any library-related project is eligible for the award. Projects from the award sponsors are ineligible for consideration. Projects of the STS Chair / Vice-Chair while those persons are in office are ineligible from consideration.
Award
A $3,000 donation by IEEE. The award is administered by the ACRL Science & Technology Section and is presented at the ALA Annual Conference each year.
Vermont Library Trustee Association Annual Conference 2010
The Fall Trustee Conference is scheduled for Saturday, November 6th at the Vermont Technical College in Randolph, Vermont. Sally Gardner Reed, the Executive Director of Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and Foundations (ALTAFF) formerly Friends of Libraries U.S.A. (FOLUSA) will be this year’s keynote speaker. Reed has spent twenty years running small public libraries, including the Ilsley Library in Middlebury, before taking the helm of ALTAFF. Her most recent publication is The Complete Library Trustee Handbook, available in the DOL Library Science collection.

The 2010 Public Library Funding & Technology Access Survey (sometimes called the Plinter survey) funded by the American Library Association and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation was opened to libraries for participation September 7, 2010. Libraries participating in the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Opportunity Online Hardware Grant Program are required to participate in the survey, but all Vermont public libraries are encouraged to submit data.

Trejo Foster Foundation Institute
Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science is pleased to announce that we are hosting the Trejo Foster Foundation Institute on November 5 and 6. The institute is a forum for library professionals and scholars to share experiences, issues and strategies in serving Hispanic/Latino populations. It will focus on two major themes: best library and outreach practices, and current issues, challenges affecting the provision of library services.
