State Farm Good Neighbor Service-Learning Grants

State Farm is proud to team up with Youth Service America to offer grants of up to $1,000 for youth-led service-learning initiatives is all 50 states and the District of Columbia, and in the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Ontario, and New Brunswick. Eligible programs will engage youth in service-learning, an effective teaching and learning strategy that promotes student learning, academic achievement, workplace readiness, and healthy communities.  State Farm Good Neighbor Service-Learning Grants encourage semester-long projects (following YSA’s Semester of Service framework) that launch on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service (January 17, 2011) and culminate on Global Youth Service Day (April 15-17, 2011).

STS Innovation in Science and Technology Librarianship Award

The purpose of the award is to recognize creative, innovative approaches to solving problems or improving products and services in science and technology librarianship. The award recognizes and promotes leadership and initiative that demonstrate impact on the academic and research community.

Any library-related project is eligible for the award. Projects from the award sponsors are ineligible for consideration. Projects of the STS Chair / Vice-Chair while those persons are in office are ineligible from consideration.

Award

A $3,000 donation by IEEE. The award is administered by the ACRL Science & Technology Section and is presented at the ALA Annual Conference each year.

Vermont Library Trustee Association Annual Conference 2010

The Fall Trustee Conference is scheduled for Saturday, November 6th at the Vermont Technical College in Randolph, Vermont. Sally Gardner Reed, the Executive Director of Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and Foundations (ALTAFF) formerly Friends of Libraries U.S.A. (FOLUSA) will be this year’s keynote speaker. Reed has spent twenty years running small public libraries, including the Ilsley Library in Middlebury, before taking the helm of ALTAFF. Her most recent publication is The Complete Library Trustee Handbook, available in the DOL Library Science collection.

Libraries participating in the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Opportunity Online Hardware Grant Program are required to participate in the survey, but all Vermont public libraries are encouraged to submit data.

Trejo Foster Foundation Institute

Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science is pleased to announce that we are hosting the Trejo Foster Foundation Institute on November 5 and 6. The institute is a forum for library professionals and scholars to share experiences, issues and strategies in serving Hispanic/Latino populations. It will focus on two major themes: best library and outreach practices, and current issues, challenges affecting the provision of library services.

I Love My Librarian Nominations Open Through September 20

Just a reminder that nominations for the national Carnegie Corporation of New York/New York Times I Love My Librarian Award run through September 20.  Nominations are accepted at www.ilovelibraries.org/ilovemylibrarian.

The award invites library users nationwide to nominate librarians in public, school and college, community college and university libraries and tell how librarians make a difference in their campus community.

Thanks to the generous support of Carnegie Corporation of New York, 10 librarians will win $5,000 and be honored at an awards ceremony in New York in December, hosted by The New York Times.

VLA and ACLU to Hold Banned Books Week Read-out – Spread the Word

Dear friends,

In celebration of the First Amendment during Banned Books Week, the VLA Intellectual Freedom Committee and the American Civil Liberties Union of Vermont will present “An Evening Without. . .Giving Voice to the Silenced,” Thursday, Sept. 30.

The free event will feature writers from around Vermont as they read from works by those whose writing has been challenged, censored, or banned.

Featured readers are Jerry Carbone (director of the Brooks Memorial Library), Jon Clinch, Joni Cole, Castle Freeman, Gretchen Holbrook Gerzina, Karen Hesse, and Suzanne Kingsbury, reading from works by Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, George Orwell, Katherine Paterson, John Steinbeck, Mark Twain, and Kurt Vonnegut.

Laura Lippman has created a why-I-love-my-library essay contest. The winning writer gets a visit from Lippman to his or her favorite library.
