Cataloger – Henry Sheldon Museum (Middlebury, VT)

The Henry Sheldon Museum is seeking a cataloger to process and catalog manuscripts and other archival materials in the Stewart-Swift Research Center collections in accordance with best practices and national standards.

The Sheldon Museum has welcomed visitors and researchers since 1884. Summary of Responsibilities

  • Creating original item-level MARC records; arranging and describing collections using concise, formatted, and detailed description in accordance with established national standards.
  • Developing new and updating legacy electronic finding aids to collections.
  • Performing updates to existing records as necessary.
  • Working under supervision of the Stewart-Swift Research Center Archivist to make collections available online and support the research needs of the community.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science, current enrollment in a Library or Information Science Master’s program, undergraduate or graduate degree in history, or a related field or Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of one year experience in the arrangement and description of archival and manuscript collections
  • Knowledge of current library and archival descriptive metadata standards including DACS, EAD, MARC, DCRM(MSS), RDA/AACR2, LC authorities, Dublin Core, MODS, and METS
  • Detail oriented and strong interpersonal skills with an ability to communicate effectively.
  • Experience working with library management systems.
  • Knowledge of library resource description and practices, including the relationships between bibliographic, holdings, and item records, is necessary.
