Circulation Library Assistant – Whiting Library (Chester, VT)

SUMMARY
The Library Assistant assists the Library Director and Youth Services Librarian with the library’s day-to-day operations, including Circulation Services, Technical Services, and Public Services. This position is part-time (16-20 hours) and includes a Saturday shift. The starting pay range is $16 to $17 an hour. SUPERVISION
The Library Assistant is appointed by the Library Director with the Board of Trustees’ approval and is responsible to the Library Director.

RESPONSIBILITY AND DUTIES

  • Circulation Services
  • Serves as the public’s first contact upon entering the library and acquaints guests with resources.
  • Performs all aspects of automated circulation, including checking out and renewing. Searches the catalog for materials requested by patrons and informs patrons of their arrivals.
  • Provides information, instruction, and assistance to library patrons on library programs, procedures, and policies; responds to all requests, inquiries, and complaints, referring patrons to other departments as appropriate.
  • Assist patrons in using the copy machine and other equipment and responding to equipment problems.
  • Accepts membership applications and issues library cards
  • Notifies patrons of overdue materials
  • Receives payments for fines, fees, sales, and donations
  • Offers readers’ advisor and reference services
  • Collects and compiles circulation statistics for monthly reports
  • Assists in training volunteers and new staff members
  • Complies with policies and procedures
  • Alerts the Library Director when changes in policies and procedures are needed
  • Technical Services:
  • Maintains displays and shelving locations of library materials.
  • Repairs print and non-print materials.
  • Creates documents and publicity materials.
  • Receives interlibrary loan materials.
  • Packages and returns outgoing interlibrary loan materials.
  • Processing withdrawn materials.
  • Other Duties as requested or assigned, but not limited to:
  • Assists in the maintenance and safety of the library building and grounds as necessary.
  • Assists with programs, exhibits, activities, and events.
  • Attends meetings and workshops.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A high school diploma is required; a college degree and relevant work experience are preferred. The required abilities are computer skills, customer service skills, dependability, friendliness, willingness to learn new skills, patience, and the ability to work with the public. A knowledge of library automation systems is preferred.

Applicants must be able to stand for long periods, and the position involves pushing, pulling, and lifting loads. The ability to lift 50 pounds is preferred.

Job Duties

 The Plainfield Public Libraries seeks a community-oriented, outgoing, creative, and tech-savvy individual to serve as the library’s Youth Services Assistant.

  • Under the direction of the Library Director, assist children, parents, and adults who work with children in selecting library materials through readers’ advisory where appropriate.
  • Lead children and teen program planning, and conduct programs and events as needed such as story times, summer reading programs, school visits, and special interest programs.

Part-time Circulation Desk Assistant- Rutland Free Library (Rutland, VT)
