Patron Services and Outreach Coordinator – Waterbury Public Library (Waterbury, VT)

Summary
The Patron Services and Outreach Coordinator provides friendly, timely, and courteous service to patrons in-library and off-site. This position is responsible for performing patron service, technology assistance and general clerical work at the Help Desk. This employee manages patron records and the flow of items loaned to local patrons, and provides patrons with assistance in their research, provides some outreach services and youth programming support, and oversees volunteers for a variety of library needs.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist library patrons before other duties, both in person and on the phone;
  • Provide a welcoming atmosphere for all patrons;
  • Provide reader’s advisory services;
  • Assist patrons with research including catalog and Inter Library Loans searches;
  • Register and familiarize new patrons with library services;
  • Manage and maintain the Help Desk to provide orderly circulation of library materials to patrons, including maintenance and creation of informational pamphlets and circulation related forms; handle program registrations;
  • Maintain the patron database and provide a variety of patron services and reports using the library’s fully integrated automated library system
  • Assist with collection of circulation and visit statistics as required; assist with compiling appropriate statistics;
  • Receive fines and donations; handle petty cash receipts and records;
  • Provide occasional outreach services outside the Library, such as delivery for homebound patrons, child care providers, senior housing; create positive relationships with partner organizations;
  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to drive own personal vehicle with valid insurance to some off-site locations (Reimbursement will be provided for mileage.);
  • Assist with the training of new staff and subs and maintain and update circulation and volunteer procedure documents;
  • Assist with Youth Programming on occasion;
  • Along with the Library Director, manage library volunteers, including recruitment, training, scheduling, and recognition;
  • Create and arrange library displays and self-directed (“passive”) programs along with other staff;
  • Notify staff of comments and suggestions received at the circulation desk; refer problems to Library Director or Assistant Librarian;
  • Support advertising of events and services with displays, communications at the circulation desk and select social media including Instagram, Facebook and Front Porch Forum and occasionally produce physical fliers

Library Director – Abbott Library (Sunapee NH)

Duties/Description: The Abbott Library located in Sunapee NH, a small New England town that enjoys proximity to Lake Sunapee and Mount Sunapee, is seeking an innovative, energetic, experienced and future-ready library professional to provide leadership to its vibrant community library.

The Director will oversee a staff of seven employees (4.5 FTE.) This staff includes a full-time Assistant Director, Technology and Outreach Librarian, and Youth Services Librarian. In addition, the library enjoys the support of more than 1300 hours of volunteer service each year. The Director is also responsible for administration, management, (including fiscal oversight) and advocacy for the library.

The ideal candidate is a strategic problem solver who is flexible, positive, creative, patient, decisive, and technologically adroit. Additionally, the ideal candidate has demonstrated success aligning people, process and technology; excellent leadership, communication, interpersonal and customer relationship skills; and is committed to outstanding patron service. A finely tuned sense of humor is not required but highly desirable.

The library serves a community of 3,342 year-round residents and a large seasonal community. It operates with an annual budget of $530,000. The construction of the library building was completed in 2014, and it offers meeting rooms for library and community use, a fireplace, comfortable seating, and a beautiful view of Mount Sunapee.

The Director will work closely with the Board of Trustees, the Friends of the Library and the Abbott Library Foundation to raise funds and advocate for the library. In past years, these organizations have contributed $25,000-$50,000 per year of additional funding for the library.

Qualifications: Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited school is strongly preferred. Two to five years of progressively responsible experience in professional library work, including three years of administrative and supervisory responsibility  in a library setting is desired. Starting Salary Range: $73,424 – $79,081 with an excellent benefits package including health and dental insurance, short-term and long-term disability and participation in the New Hampshire Retirement System.

Librarian – Mary Blood Memorial Library (West Windsor, VT)

The Mary Blood Memorial Library is searching for a new Librarian.  This position is currently 16 hours per week, though this could increase.  The Librarian oversees one 12 hour per month Library Assistant and one part-time Youth Services Coordinator, scheduled for 10 hours per month. The Librarian meets with the library board once a month and reports to both the library board and the town select board.

Primary duties are to create a warm and welcoming resource for the community. As the sole librarian, duties include applying professional standards in collection development, programming, reference, cataloging, scheduling, managing personnel, planning, and service to the community. As a member of GMLC using KOHA, this year we began to digitize the contents of the 123 year old library.

West Windsor (and the village of Brownsville) has a small and widely dispersed population of about 1,300 people. Our library is supported by a very active “Friends of the MLB” organization.  We have an amazing general store and café, a community run ski and recreation area, an active historical society, a volunteer fire department, and our Albert Bridge K-6 elementary school. We are located about ten miles west of Route 91 at the base of Mt. Ascutney.

The Mary Blood Memorial Library has recently undergone many improvements, including;

  • installation of a state-of-the-art HVAC system
  • insulated the lower level
  • redesigned the main reading room, purchasing comfortable and attractive seating
  • culled the collection of outdated material and with carefully selected contemporary books
  • digitizing our collection (ongoing)  and created a user-friendly web site (will go live soon)
  • increased patron hours

Help/Reference Desk – Rutland Free Library (Rutland, VT)

Rutland Free Library is looking for a librarian for our Help / reference Desk. Primary duties include assisting users with our public computers — especially printing — basic upkeep of public computers, readers’ advisory, and generally helping users access the collection and find their way around the building.

An ideal candidate will have a degree in library and information science but experience working in a reference environment will be considered in lieu of a degree. Good technology skills are a must. We use Koha, Aspen, Deep Freeze, Comprise, Assabet, Libby, Palace, and Kanopy software, and troubleshooting print jobs is pretty much a daily task.

Rutland Free Library is an independent, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose sole responsibility is providing library services to the communities of Rutland City, Rutland Town, Mendon, Tinmouth, and Ira, which support our work through taxes.  We are large only by Vermont standards, with some 80,000 titles available. We lend in print, ebook, audiobook on CD, as well as streaming video, music, and audiobooks.

Library Computer Assistant PT – Fletcher Free Library (Burlington, VT)

General Purpose

This position reports to the Technology Librarian/Technician Director and is responsible for supporting the public in using the Library’s computers, printers, copiers, scanners and fax machines. The Library Computer Assistant is responsible for assisting the public in using various software applications in the Library Tech Center, assisting card holders in signing on to the public computers through our time management system, and issuing guest passes to non-card holders. Provide instructional services in both individual and group settings. These services include one-on-one technology support to community members that include: signing up & using library online services; setting up and managing email accounts; assisting with basic technology needs for job seeking; assisting with basic technology needs for housing and misc. social services; etc.

This position is also responsible for maintaining, setting up, and resolving issues with the Library’s computers and troubleshooting hardware and software problems. This role performs basic maintenance on technology equipment, clean technology equipment, set-up for technology equipment, troubleshooting technology equipment, minor repair on technology equipment and perform other technological support duties as assigned. This position also assists with strategy for the library’s computers and networks, as well as recommends equipment and software. This position also assists with the development and teaching of technology classes both for the public and the library staff. This position assists with the hiring of classroom technology instructors and liaisons with them when needed.

Essential Job Functions

  • Explains, demonstrates and assists library users with use of Library equipment and software applications. May help patrons with operation of personal devices.
  • Teach digital literacy skills in individual and group settings. Instruction areas may include, but not be limited to, Microsoft Office, online platforms (i.e. Facebook, etc.), and mobile technology.
  • Perform security administration function for Public User Computers. Develops new computer classes that respond to emerging technologies and trends (i.e. new Apps, new devices, etc.)
  • Assists with data collection and presentations for library statistics.
  • Generates software reports from the library’s software vendors as needed.
  • Manages data collection for the Tech Center and for Computer Classes.
  • Suggests new technologies to improve library efficiencies.
  • Assists library users with wireless access on personal computers and electronic devices.
  • Maintains current knowledge of hardware and software, and provides assistance to users with the use of the latest technology.
  • Troubleshoots minor computer problems for library users and staff. Assists staff by identifying and reporting issues to them.
  • Performs computer set up and troubleshooting for programs, classes, webinars, or meeting room reservation.
  • Assists community groups and individuals with meeting room Audio-Visual equipment.
  • Prepares and performs preventive maintenance for public and staff computers and laptops.
  • Maintains operation and procedure records as required.
  • Performs Tech Center opening and closing procedures as required.
  • Uses personal computer, current software and other common office equipment.
  • Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Uses problem solving skills to assist in determining priorities, finding timely solutions to departmental or system-wide issues and providing quality customer service.
  • Provides quality assistance to staff by seeking to understand their needs and providing relevant support. Remains calm even in stressful conditions.
  • Maintains a positive approach while doing daily tasks and when faced with adversity. Encourages and recognizes the contribution of others.
  • Looks for ways to provide quality support to promote Library services.
  • Tallies relevant statistics and creates statistical reports as needed.
  • Provides information to library users about the programs and services available at the library.
  • Provides basic reference service in-person, over the phone, and via email using print and electronic resources.
  • Refers patrons to a reference librarian for difficult to answer or research related questions.
  • Assists with training volunteers in the Computer Lab.
  • Provide a variety of patron services using a fully integrated automated library system, including but not limited to; entering patron data, such as name and address and issuing library cards; recording changes of address/name and using the notes field to record special circumstances, charging library materials in-and-out.
  • Searching the automated catalog to place holds; and process reserves and patron requests for information; renewing library books and materials for patrons in-house or over the telephone using ILS system. Use and help patrons with the OPAC as needed.
  • Answer phone calls, phone requests, take and distribute messages. Perform ready reference as needed.
  • Research and prepare order form for patron requests and provide correct information for Selectors or inter-library loan department.
  • Responsible for opening and closing procedure for library tech center.
  • Report violations of library rules or other conduct effecting library security to supervisor. Assists with trespass notices as needed.
  • Perform light custodial and grounds maintenance tasks as needed.

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements

  • Ability to actively support City diversity, equity, and cultural competency efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as evidenced by ongoing trainings and professional development.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or 4 years of relevant experience required.
  • Ability to provide outstanding customer service in person, on the telephone, and via e-mail and other forms of electronic communication.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply technical manuals and documents required.
  • Able to operate, adjust and troubleshoot computer workstations required.
  • Ability to explore and research solutions to computer problems as they arise.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate computer problems, including working with the City of Burlington IT Department.
  • Familiar with publicly hosted email systems such as Gmail and Yahoo mail required.
  • Familiar with Microsoft operating systems and Microsoft Office/SharePoint applications required.
  • Familiar with webhosting software Drupal and WordPress.
  • General understanding of Apple OS and Linux OS.
  • Experience in working with Microsoft, Android and Android and Apple IO cellular and tablet devices.
  • Strong commitment to positive and polite public service.
  • Computer Lab and/or Library experience preferred.
  • Software installation experience preferred.
  • Ability to work independently after training is complete.
  • Regular attendance is necessary and is essential to meeting the expectations of the job functions.
  • Ability to understand and comply with City standards, safety rules and personnel policies.
  • Strong problem solving skills.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Demonstrates strong verbal communication in responding to library user and staff questions.
  • Uses clear written communication to share important information with coworkers in a timely manner.
