SLA New England and our Co-Sponsor SLA Rhode Island Present
Communication, Collaboration & Commitment
Saturday October 13th, 2012
While we hope that we have planned a helpful and successful event for October 13th, registration is quite low at the moment and we can’t succeed without all of you! We hope that this post will provide some encouragement to those of you who just haven’t gotten around to registering yet!
- Anyone who registers for the conference before midnight next Tuesday, Sept 25th, 2012 will be entered in a raffle to win one of *three free registrations*. Don’t worry, if you’ve already registered, you will be automatically entered. The three winners will have their conference payment refunded in full.
- We are pushing back the start time of the conference from 8am to 8:45am. This means that the schedule will be as follows:

WORLD BOOK NIGHT 2013 is a celebration of literacy by publishers, bookstores, libraries and individuals who love books and reading. On WORLD BOOK NIGHT 2013, 25,000 “book givers” will each give away 20 copies of a specially-printed, not-for-resale WBN edition of book they have read and loved (from a list of 25-30 titles selected by librarians and booksellers) to complete strangers – people who may never have owned a book of their own. To promote this literacy event, libraries and bookstores – as organizational participants in the event – form a nationwide advocacy and distribution network.
Young Writers Project
Each year, Young Writers Project (YWP) creates original, weekly writing challenges and invites Vermont teens 13-19 (and younger with parental permission) to respond to the prompts in school and after school on the YWP website, youngwritersproject.org. The best of the students’ writing and visual art is then published in partnership with newspapers across Vermont, on VTDigger.org, in YWP’s monthly digital magazine, The Voice, and annual Anthology. Along with the writing challenges, YWP has a vibrant online community of youth who create their own podcasts, open mic nights, a book club and more. They also participate in monthly writing workshops and other projects and events that revolve around the YWP site.
YWP, which started in Burlington, VT in 2006, is an independent nonprofit with a mission to inspire, mentor, publish and promote young writers and artists. Please encourage the young writers and artists in your communities to sign up for a free account and join the YWP community.

Vermont Library Conference Planners Want to Hear From You!
It’s time to call for ideas for workshops for the Spring 2013 conference. We offer what librarians tell us they want, so if you haven’t seen the kind of workshops you want at conference in the last few years, now’s the time to let us know what you want to see. Keynote ideas are always welcome as well. Please send proposals and ideas to jnapier@kellogghubbard.org by November 1.
